The contracts awarded by Fortune 500 Company, DB Thermal, require the production of large plate work and structural components for regenerative air pre-heaters for Eskom’s Medupi and Kusile power stations.

The R70-billion Medupi power station is situated in Lephalale, Limpopo Province and is to be followed by the construction of Kusile, Eskom’s second most advanced coal project after Medupi. These contracts have already been commissioned.

David Wafer, Prodin business development director says the Medupi plant consists of six 794 MW coal fired power units forming the biggest fossil power plant ever to be produced by Eskom and will be the first base load power plant to be built in the country for 20 years. 

"Prodin is pleased to have been selected as a preferred supplier for the manufacture of these components and has developed a reputation for producing quality components according to stringent international standards,” says Wafer.

Medupi power station is the first new greenfield coal fired power station in SA in more than two decades and will have a capacity of between 4 200 MW and 4 500 MW by the time the project is completed in January 2015.

This project will enable Eskom to deliver on its projected electricity growth plan of 4% per annum which is aligned to government’s target of a 6% GDP growth between 2010 and 2014. This programme will mean that Eskom can meet the supply of South Africa’s future electricity needs.
